In 1913 the construction of the harbour in Reykjavík began, it was finished four years later. The whole environment and the activities related to fishing industries have changed in many ways over the years. The old cabins in the harbour have been converted in recent years into various restaurants and cosy coffee shops.
These changes occurred mainly after the city changed the law regulating the activities in the harbour area.
Currently, there is only one company still operating in the old fishermen's cabins, Sindrafiskur EHF. This company is owned by the same family who run the restaurant verbud11. Sindrafiskur Ehf has been processing fish in cabin N°10 in this cabin since 1970. In 1989, the company bought cabin N°11 and work continued there. All other cabins are the property of the harbour authorities.
In the beginning of 2014, it was decided to renovate the fishing station and convert it into a restaurant. In celebration of it's heritage, the decision was made to name the restaurant, verbud11. The family has decades of experience in all fish related matters.
It should be noted that this family has been operating the fishing vessel RE-46 since 1977. When the boats is docked, our visitors can visit the ship in the harbour. The crew of Sindri RE-46 have the important task of delivering quality fresh fish to the restaurant.
In 2013, students of the Applied Cultural Studies at the University of Iceland shot a short documentary about Jón of Sindra. He is one of the owners of Verbud11 and Sindrafiskur. Jón Sigurðsson is a fisherman at heart and a great entrepreneur. Here you can watch this video here documentary in Icelandic, it is just over 6 minutes long.
