The Hofdi House
We will drive to Hofdi, the house where the all-important summit between former US President Ronald Reagan and former USSR General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev took place in 1986. From there we will head to the Harpa Reykjavik Concert Hall, which had its grand opening in the spring of 2011 and then continue to the University of Iceland.
Harpa Conference Centre
Harpa is not only a music hall holding concerts and cultural events but is also a conference centre with meeting facilities, in-house catering and a restaurant. The Danish architectural firm, Henning Larsen Architects and the Icelandic architectural firm, Batteríið Architects, were the main designers of Harpa.
Althingi the House of Parliament
From Harpa we drive to the centre of the city to visit Althingi, the Icelandic House of Parliament, built in 1881, and the City Hall which is located next to Reykjavíkurtjörn, a pond. We will visit the tallest building in Iceland, the Hallgrimskirkja Church, rising to 74.5 metres (244 ft). It is situated in the centre of the city and has become one of Reykjavik's best known symbols. The church took 38 years to build and was designed by Gudjon Samuelsson, the state architect. His design was greatly influenced by Iceland´s mountains and glaciers. It is named after Hallgrimur Petursson, one of Iceland´s most famous poets and clergyman.
Botanical Garden of Laugardalur
Then we head to the sports and recreation area of Laugardalur, visit the Botanical Gardens and sculptures crafted by Asmundur Sveinsson. We will also drive to see the Arbaer Open Air Museum, where historic buildings have been rebuilt and some fascinating information about the lives of Icelanders in the olden days is displayed..
We then drive to the Perlan Restaurant and Cafeteria, which are built on top of the six water tanks which used to hold the city’s hot water supply - here we will enjoy the spectacular views over Reykjavik and its surrounding area. We will then drive to Bessastadir, the Presidential Residence of Iceland which was built between 1761-1766.
Finally, we will drive you back to Reykjavik where we drop off our passengers at the pier in good time for their ship's departure.
